This styled shoot has been a dream of mine to do for a couple of years now. The inspiration arose from Degas’ painting Dancers in Blue. I picked up a postcard version of the painting when I lived in Europe, and it’s currently hanging over my makeup stand. It was a constant reminder of something I wanted to do for years. After a couple of years of staring at it, I finally reached out to Christine of Christine Quarte Photography and Andrea of A Beautiful Wild Design. With their help, my dream finally became a reality with an Editorial Wedding at The Westside Warehouse. To make it even better, this was my first attempt at utilizing a hybrid shooting system, which basically means I shot both digital and film!
The Inspiration
The painting captures a quiet feeling of anticipation before the curtain rises, the meditative energy of the dancers as they prepare to put their hearts on stage. These small moments are mirrored on a wedding day as a couple eagerly prepare and wait for the unique and precious occasion of saying their vows in front of loved ones.
The Cake
Gingerspice Bakery created a wonderful variety of little treats for our dessert table! She added subtle French influences in our dessert table with the macarons and eclairs, and a delicate blush painterly texture on the cake.
The Attire
We wanted a gorgeous dress that could help capture the movement of the ballerina as we had her perform her dance moves. Hannah Tikkanen‘s Opheila dress perfectly matched what we were looking for.
The Details
We used Degas’ vibrant layered blues and soft pinks for our color palette, and took advantage of the amazing French antique furniture and salvaged architectural details of our venue. The venue owner of The Westside Warehouse also provided us with an antique painted stage backdrop for portraits of the dancers.Hints of 19th century style paired with a modern spirit create a feeling of romance as timeless as Degas’ lovely ballerinas.
A Big Thank you to the Vendors!
Without these wonderful folks, I couldn’t have made this dream a reality! Thank you so much for your involvement!
