My 2019 Word of the Year … and how I figured it out

Jan 1, 2019

Miss my breakdown of 2018? Catch it here to read up on where I think my business stands after 2018!

2019 Word of the Year

If you have been following along on my Insta stories from this past weekend, you may have noticed that I did my goal planning in a very weird way. Basically, I took all Saturday to complete my 2019 Powersheets and Shay Cochrane’s Business Assessment workbook! Now, why is this weird? I spent the whole day staring at numbers, multiple possibilities, and a dictionary!

Wait, Heather…. A dictionary?

Yep! One of the many things that Powersheets helps you do is choose a word that represents everything that you want to accomplish and something for you to keep focused on throughout the year. For example, last year, I chose “Align”. I felt that 2017 was all over the place as I was trying to figure out where I wanted to take this business. It was like I was a house that had just been moved into, but all of the boxes and furniture were strewn all over the place. I wanted to align myself so that I could clearly see the goals I wanted in front of me, and organize all of the boxes in it’s designated room to be unpacked and analyzed carefully.

For 2019, I needed a word that would describe a year of purposeful intent, that would help me focus on my goals, and that could help describe what phase my business was in. I decided on “Construct”. According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, Construct is defined as:

Construct

1 – to make or form by combining or arranging parts or elements
2 – to draw (a geometrical figure) with suitable instruments and under specified conditions
3 – to set in logical order

As soon as I saw the definition written there in black and white, I felt like a light pillar had come down and was shining right on top of me for finding it.

Okay, maybe not that dramatic, but you get the picture.

But why this word? I love every single one of its definitions because they all play into where I want my business to go and the goals I have in place to get myself there. Here, let me explain:

1 – to make or form by combining or arranging parts or elements

I have been talking about building a sustainable business for years to come. I don’t want to be one of those businesses that shuts down after 5 years of business. It is more common than you think! I need to continue laying my sustainability blocks down to build a solid foundation. Without a strong foundation, the building will always crumble!

2 – to draw (a geometrical figure) with suitable instruments and under specified conditions

This one is kind of two-fold. 1) I love that it is talking about Geometry here. My math-loving heart is skipping a beat here. 2) I zeroed in on “under specified conditions”. I don’t want any type of business. I want one that will last. I have already determined what conditions my business needs to meet, now I just need to construct it.

3 – to set in logical order

I take this as a reminder that it is okay to GROW SLOW. Building a business, or in all honesty, most everything in life is always grown slow. If you skip to the end, you are going to miss out on a couple of key steps that make it all happen with a solid and strong foundation!

Do you have a word for 2019? If so, tell me about it in the comments below! I would love to hear why you chose it!

Next, I will be talking about my goals for 2019. Stay tuned to hear all about it!
